How Kickstarters Began

Kickstarters was an idea in 2018, which has continued to grow to the present day.

While working as a Key Stage 1 teacher, I attended a training course with the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE). It was there that I truly realised the power of stories - how a simple book can light up a child's imagination and transform their learning. At the same time, I was coaching 3-4-year-olds in football, often wondering how to keep such little ones fully engaged.

That's when the idea hit me: What if reading and football could work together?What if stories could bring more meaning, structure and excitement to children's physical development? I couldn't shake the thought. For the next year, I explored hundreds of books and created lessons that blended children's literature with football and multi-skill activities. By the end, I had developed 16 story-based lesson plans designed to inspire children both on the page and on the pitch.

Using much-loved books like We're Going on a Bear Hunt and Lost and Found transformed each session. Children who struggled to engage with reading suddenly listened with wide eyes, shared ideas and made incredible connections between stories and movement. The impact was phenomenal! I watched children develop a genuine love for reading while building confidence, coordination and football skills. Their excitement proved this approach worked - and it pushed me to take it further.

Kickstarters Today

Eight years on, Kickstarters has grown far beyond that initial idea.

⚽️We now have over 30 detailed lesson plans for our Reading Intervention
⚽️We deliver our unique approach to nurseries and primary schools across Grimsby and Cleethorpes
⚽️Our brand has proudly expanded into a full P.E. curriculum for primary-aged children

Kickstarters also offers a wide range of high-quality football services, including:

1-2-1 coaching, Player Development Programmes, HAF holiday camps, breakfast clubs, a Saturday Club, and much more. And in 2025, we reached a huge milestone - launching our very own Junior Football Club, with two Under-7 teams competing for the first time.

Looking Ahead

I'm incredibly proud of everything Kickstarters has become and I'm keen to continue providing the wide range of services to a high standard to Grimsby & Cleethorpes. What started as an idea, has lead to 1000s of children enjoying and developing their football skills, personal skills and their love of reading through Kickstarters. We're ready to write our next chapter...
